Mirrors of the Soul - Illusions of Universal Identity
From 29 April to 6 May 2025, at the historic Burgh House (New End Square, Hampstead NW3 1LT), we hosts a one‑week exhibition by the internationally acclaimed artist Liu Youju, with 4 artists from Taiwan & UK, curated by Professor Wendy Wan with curatorial partner Shane Day.
This exhibition, centered on “mirroring” and “illusion,” examines how contemporary identities are revisited, reconstructed, and deconstructed amid the currents of globalization. Internationally acclaimed pioneer of the Illusionist painting movement, Liu Youju, presents his latest series of works and, together with four artists from Taiwan & UK, constructs a cross-regional, multi-voiced visual dialogue drawn from diverse cultural, geographical, and personal experiences.
Liu Youju
A pioneer of Illusionist Painting, Liu’s vivid works—swirling strokes, ambiguous silhouettes and cosmic symbols—have mesmerised audiences at the Louvre, the Pompidou and, most recently, the Cameroon Pavilion of the 2024 Venice Biennale. Honoured with the Michelangelo International Prize (2019) and appointed Honorary Academic of the Accademia delle Arti del Disegno (2021), Liu continues to ignite dialogues on humanity’s shared essence.
For this special London appearance, around twenty recent paintings will transform Burgh House’s Georgian rooms into a kaleidoscopic chamber of reflection. Viewers are invited to look “through” each canvas as a mirror, confronting the shifting relationship between individual identity and collective consciousness.
Patty Lin 林霈媞
Patty Lin 林霈媞 is a Taiwan-born abstract painter whose bold color palettes, dynamic brushwork, and emotive compositions have captivated audiences at Taipei’s Zhongshan Hall, London’s Peggy Jay Gallery, and beyond. A published author and university lecturer, she has spoken at the United Nations Gender Equality Conference and serves as Vice President of the Macau International Cultural Association.
With a digital following, i.e. FB/IG, exceeding 790,000, Lin seamlessly blends fine art with brand collaborations—from designing wine labels for Australia’s premier vineyards to creating immersive installations for public venues.
Kate Huang 黃韶琴
A trailblazer of “Mind–Heart Integrated” medical art, Kate Huang’s dynamic creations—neuron-inspired brushstrokes, regenerative motifs and vivid symbolic flora—have captivated audiences at the Monaco Art Fair, Madrid Contemporary Art Week and, most recently, in her solo exhibition at the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts (2024). Honoured with the UNESCO Sovereign Artistic Award (2022) and appointed Honorary Artist of the Accademia Internazionale per l’Arte e la Cultura (2023), Huang continues to ignite global conversations on gender equality, holistic healing and human resilience.
For this special London presentation, some recent watercolours from her acclaimed Rebirth Series will transform Burgh House’s Georgian parlours into immersive chambers of renewal and reflection. Viewers are invited to look “through” each canvas as a mirror—confronting the intertwined journeys of personal transformation and collective empowerment.

Artwork Description:
“A New Discover" presents a fusion of warmth and exploration through a harmonious composition of two rabbits and a bouquet of roses, conveying the joy and surprise of discovering new things in daily life. This artwork employs delicate lines and warm tones, creating a soft visual effect through the expressive quality of coloured pencils. The plush texture of the rabbits contrasts with the roses, expressing the resilient and soft qualities of life.
This work invites viewers to reconnect with their inner curiosity, reminding us to maintain the perspective of a discoverer in our daily lives. Just as Easter symbolises rebirth and hope, this artwork celebrates the new opportunities we face every morning when we wake up to the world, and our ability to find extraordinary meaning in ordinary things. Each new discovery, no matter how small, can add colour and fragrance to our lives like these pink roses, making our spirits as soft and fluffy as rabbits, forever maintaining a gentle wonder towards the world.
The Illusion of Universal Identity
At its core, this group exhibition confronts the paradox of contemporary existence: the simultaneous universalization and fragmentation of identity. Against a globalized backdrop defined by transnational flows, Liu Youju and four Taiwan-born painters now based in the UK reveal how identity—once firmly rooted in geography, history, and tradition—has become fluid, hybrid, and ever-evasive. Liu’s cosmic symbols and swirling illusionist brushwork intersect with his Taiwanese colleagues’ explorations of migration, memory, and cultural dislocation, forming a polyphonic dialogue on belonging and rupture.
Through the lens of illusionism—a visual strategy pioneered by Liu Youju and taken up in distinct ways by each Taiwan artist—the exhibition deliberately blurs representational boundaries. Canvases dissolve figuration into ethereal textures and ambiguous silhouettes, prompting viewers to engage their subconscious and question the coherence of individual and communal selves. These mirrored illusions invite us to witness how identities are constructed, deconstructed, and reassembled in response to shifting social, cultural, and political forces.
Colour here becomes an affective catalyst. Liu’s cerulean expanses and magenta pulses resonate alongside the Taiwan painters’ own palettes: from delicate ink-wash gradations that evoke nostalgia to bold chromatic collisions suggesting cultural tension. Together, these varied schemes transform the gallery into an emotional landscape—each hue and gesture reflecting the interior states of viewers and underscoring identity’s fluid dynamics in a transnational age.
Conclusion: Navigating Identity through Artistic Mirrors
"Mirrors of the Soul: Illusions of Universal Identity" transcends a single-artist showcase to become a collective inquiry into self and society. By juxtaposing Liu Youju’s illusionist canvases with the varied practices of four Taiwanese diaspora painters, the exhibition invites deep introspection and cross-cultural critique. Visitors traverse realms of personal memory, social commentary, and philosophical reflection, encountering the central question: Who are we when identity is constantly in flux?
Ultimately, this exhibition affirms contemporary art’s power to bridge cultural divides and articulate shared concerns. The painted illusions at Burgh House offer a rare chance to confront our shared humanity. In the interplay of mirroring surfaces and visionary depths, we glimpse the ongoing process of identity-making—ever shifting, ever intertwined—reminding us that in a globalized world, our identities are both mirrors and multifaceted refrains of collective and individual narratives.
